How the alarm system for barbed wire/ metal rope works
It is possible to increase the passive protection guaranteed by barbed wire by adding our plastic optical fiber to it, which detects cutting or deformation in case of attempted break-in.
Moreover, where aesthetic or regulatory reasons prevent the installation of barbed wire, similar active protection against climbing attempts can be achieved with the LiteFENCE system for wire rope: two lines of 4mm steel wire rope combined with the LiteWIRE plastic fiber cable are positioned above the fence. In case of deformation or cutting of the fiber, the system detects an alarm.
The intrusion detection system for barbed wire/wire rope consists of the following elements:
- LiteFENCE: optical analyzer, one for every 125m of barbed wire or 80m of metal rope.
- LiteWIRE: plastic optical fiber cable (with UV filter) that carries the light signal and “reads” the deformations of the barbed wire/metal rope.
- Cable tensioning bolt: opto-mechanical accessory that amplifies the effect generated by the barbed wire/metal rope deformation on the optical fiber cable.
- Clip: mechanical accessories with the function of keeping the LiteWIRE cable and the barbed wire/wire metal close to ensure homogeneous system sensitivity and protection against false alarms.
When an attempt to climb over or lift the barbed wire/metale rope causes a flexion of the fiber (or its breakage), the LiteFENCE analyzer intercepts the variation of the received light signal and sends the alarm. Subsequently, if the fiber has not been interrupted, the LiteFENCE analyzer restores active protection, even if the fiber deformation persists.
Wind and vibrations generated by the external environment (e.g., moving vehicles or birds) do not produce any deformation of the barbed wire/metal rope and therefore are not identified as alarms: this important feature makes the system easy to install and free from false alarms. No programming or special installer training is required.
The LiteFENCE analyzer is equipped with an optical power measurement tester that is easy and intuitive to use, allowing the installer to verify the correctness of the actions taken at any time during installation.

- Can birds cause false alarms?
The system is calibrated to intercept deformations caused by weights greater than 10kg, so birds are generally not a cause of false alarms.

With all alarm control panels. The alarm output is a clean NC contact.
- Can I apply this alarm system to concertina wire?

- How many meters of fence can I protect with each LiteFENCE analyzer?
125m of perimeter in the case of barbed wire protection (two fiber passes) – 80m of perimeter in the case of wire rope protection (two fiber passes): the wire rope transmits the effect of its deformation to the optical fiber less effectively than barbed wire; correct system sensitivity is achieved by installing a greater number of cable tensioning bolts. Note: depending on the security level of the site to be protected, the fence height, possible situations of easy climbing, etc., the number of fiber passes can be increased.
